The more we travel, the more we realize how amazing this country is… it’s big, blue skies, chiseled mountains, wild rivers… hitting the open road is a feeling like no other and this country is full of gems. These gems are the national parks, the most beautiful, majestic areas in the US never to be developed, intended to be preserved and enjoyed by all. Yellowstone was the first designated national park in 1872, the first of 59.

Yellowstone National Park is amazing… like being on another planet with its shooting geysers, bubbling mud pots, it’s prismatic hot springs. With over 2 million acres of land, there are forests of lodgepole pine, grand mountains, canyons, wild rivers, and the best of it… active volcanoes and thermal springs that are constantly changing the land every day…pools of hot water empty, geysers erupt, steam streams out of the ground… the earth is changing right before our eyes, it’s visible in Yellowstone.

Being here, experiencing this, it makes me want to travel through this grand country of ours. Summer is here. Now is the time to do it. What’s on your list this summer?

Workshop Recap: Floral Arrangement Workshop With Moon Canyon.

It was blooming flowers all over Poketo this past Sunday, at our Floral Arrangement Workshop led by Kristen Caissie of Moon Canyon. Kristen brought in lush locally sourced summer flowers – from dahlias to rananculus to lavender – and transformed Poketo into a beautiful garden (if only for an afternoon).

It was amazing to see everyone so excited and brimming with creative ideas, eagerly listening to Kristen share on how she makes her magic happen. Lots of experimenting went on, and everyone walked away from the class inspired, with their very own wildly beautiful arrangements and gorgeous floral headbands we secretly wish we could wear everyday. All in all, we couldn’t be happier to see everyone enjoying themselves and picking up new skills along the way.

Mark your calendar: Hot Knives Book Release Party at Poketo July 14th

Two former line cooks who believe in the purity of produce and the goodness of vegetables, Evan George and Alex Brown are the witty and irreverent “Hot Knives” duo. You may have seen their book, The Hot Knives Vegetarian Cookbook: Salad Daze at Poketo LA. This month, they will be releasing their latest publication, Lust for Leaf.

To celebrate their new book, Hot Knives will be hosting a launch party and book signing at the Poketo store on Sunday, July 14th from 2-5pm. Come down to meet Alex and Evan, listen to them read excepts from the book, and hear them speak about summer dining and tips for planning the perfect summer party! They’ll also do a short demo on “How to Make Booze Holes”, a short recipe from their “Sweets” chapter that utilizes various alcohols for flavoring.

Sweetening things up, Alex and Evan will be bringing in their favorite vegan baker, Clara’s Cakes. Clara’s Cakes will be baking some treats, including an interpretation of a recipe from their new book. It’ll be a fun-filled afternoon free and open to the public, so we hope to see you there!

Evil Friends… Portugal. The Man

In celebration of Portugal. The Man’s latest album, Evil Friends, Tumblr hosted an art event and record release party last week. Lines were out the door… Those that got there early had the opportunity to meet the band, and to see the special collaboration between John Gourley and Gif-iti artist, INSA put together. I had a rare opportunity to sit down and interview the both of them… casual, funny and just awesome… Tumblr will be posting that video interview on their music blog.

The album just released on June 4th, produced by Danger Mouse… it’s one of my favorites from Portugal. The Man.

The exhibition also showcased photography from Danger Mouse for the album… John drew over the top making it even more killer.

Here is John right before the interview… he was making things light… I was pretty nervous.

Zach here… always snapping the photos… they are so damn good with their fans. Look at that smile!
