Dikka and Vega are the most stylish husband and wife duo. Not only that, but, they are a photographer/stylist creative powerhouse. Lucky for us, Dikka is Poketo’s in-house photographer! We were so excited for Dikka and Vega when they got the chance to shoot for the cover of NYLON Indonesia. They got some things in the photoshoot from the Poketo site also! Do you see the awesome Merit Badge Necklace there? Below are some photos that made it to print and some outtakes you won’t find anywhere else.

The little pocket in SF…

There is a little pocket neighborhood in the Outer Sunset that I find myself going to every time we visit SF. It’s not far from the ocean and it definitely has a laid back, sleepy, surf vibe. It did not exist when we lived there, actually, there really wasn’t much out there. Now there is a handful of really cool eateries and stores that have made the Outer Sunset a destination.

Outerlands, General Store, and Mollusks. I’ll let the pictures do most of the talking…

General Store has a great mix of new, yet classic wares, apparel, and accessories all with a touch of handmade. One of my favorite parts of the shop is the “non-shop”… a cool outdoor yard with a beautiful mix of succulents, rocks, and benches perfect for chilling out…

The secret art room at Park Life

We love to visit our stockists wherever we go. Park Life is the only stores of its kind in the Richmond District of San Francisco. Proprietors Jamie Alexander and Derek Song fill the store with art books, graphic tees, art skate decks, and tons of pop culture wares. The space is a mix of goods and fine art with a monthly rotation of exhibitions that have included artists Andrew Schoultz, Thomas Campbell, and Kelly Lynn Jones, among others.

When we visted Park Life, to no surprise, it was bustling with activity. But, my favorite part of the space is an area where most people don’t actually see and even know about. Jamie took me to the secret backroom. This is where they keep most of the prized art pieces that they reserve for the more serious collectors. This backroom gallery has been a bit of boon for them, selling original artwork by some big names. It was a treat to see some originals from artists we love. Here’s a peek…

Starry Kitchen, full of surprises…

We work hard here at the Poketo studio. But, what’s new? We always hustle to bring the best and brightest, having fun and experimenting simultaneously. Working from the ground up, that’s the way we do it and everyone (that’s you reading this) along for the ride is right there with us. When it’s crazy busy, our Downtown Los Angeles offers some respite which most of the time for us, involves food. Angie had a spontaneous craving for Starry Kitchen. The Poketo crew will not argue with that.

Starry Kitchen is the now the legit LA restaurant that once started out as an underground kitchen out of the apartment of owners Thi and Nguyen Tran. Hmmmmm, sounds very familiar. You’d have to be in the know to find out when Thi and Nguyen would do their underground dinners… but, now, countless hours of sweat equity, a love for food, and a voracious fan base that spread their dream word of mouth, Thi and Nguyen opened up their first restaurant back in 2009. Two years later, Starry Kitchen is now a well established restaurant, but, still full of surprises.

Nguyen and Thi rotate the menu weekly which is what keeps things interesting. You never really know what is on the menu until you arrive. They are always trying out new recipes and this keeps things interesting, experimental, and fun. One thing for sure is that it’s always delicious.

As a matter of fact, tomorrow, their special pho will be on the menu. This is something that is rarely on the menu. From talking to Nguyen, this is a broth that’s been brewing for hours and hours and hours… I forget, I think he mentioned a full day. I forget exactly, but, when you go, just look for the very energetic and awesome guy in the front… ask Nguyen anything, he is not shy and he’ll let you know exactly what’s up (he’s known to be so stoked on his customers and excited about the food that, well, he kicks holes in the wall). It’s true, Starry Kitchen is far from a hole in the wall, but, yes, there is a hole in the wall.

Why our little nook in Downtown Los Angles is so awesome….

The Poketo studio has been in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles for over 4 years now. We were one of the first businesses to move into our building, even before LA’s famous Urth Caffe opened across the street. We love it here. There is so much energy, so many cool eateries, cafes, stores popping up down here. This area of downtown used to be lite industrial, manufacturing, and artist lofts. Some of that still exists, but, a new set of business are coming in to cater to a creative downtown crowd. All these places, with a very designy, independent, laidback vibe… in short, awesome.

A little field trip today for the Poketo crew to Handsome Coffee and Thvm Atelier. Note: Please excuse the Iphone blurriness, I don’t know what was wrong with my hands today.

Handsome Coffee, still in the construction process, but, they are opening their backdoor for the community to come down and taste their incredible coffee. This is a place where you won’t find options like soy, non fat milk, sugar, or chocolate. These guys have the heart and experience of quality coffee… and trust me, it’s damn good. I mean, look do you see those Barista Champion trophies there? Plus, really, really nice and down to earth folks. Say ‘hello’ to Jesse and Michael when you go in.

Thvm is a collective of artists, designers and musicians. Founded by Brian Kim and Olga Nazarova, this was originally the custom jeans brand that was based out of Echo Park for many years. They moved the operations downtown into a huge 6000 or so square foot space and have made it a space for different creatives of different disciplines.
